Good news!!! TNT has renewed the series Hawthorne which stars Jada Pinkett Smith and Michael Vartan.

TNT’s ‘Hawthorne’ prescribed a third season

By Rodney Ho

TNT’s “Hawthorne” is getting another lease on life. The Atlanta-based network has ordered a third ten-episode run for this Jada Pinkett Smith-led nurse drama. It’s set to be back in 2011.

The first season in 2009 averaged 3.4 million viewers. This past season, which concluded last last month, drew an average of 3.1 million viewers, though it increases to 3.7 million when you count DVR viewing the rest of the week.

It stars Pinkett-Smith as a tough yet caring nurse. Her hospital shut down season one and she adjusts to life at another problematic hospital season two. She also grapples with a relationship with a doctor who had treated her late husband.

Though critical reception has been tepid compared to that of shows such as “The Closer,” TNT said “Hawthorne” has resonated with women 25 to 54, where it ranked No. 1 among cable ad-supported shows on Tuesday nights. Its ratings are comparable to that of “Leverage” and “Memphis Blue” and better than “Dark Blue.”

After the season finale I was wondering if TNT was gonna renew Hawthorne.  The down side to this is that there are only 10 episodes which means that the series goes by so fast.  Anyway I’m happy for Jada, Michael and the rest of the cast and I’m looking forward to season 3 next summer.

Pinkett Smith show “Hawthorne” gets renewal

By Nellie Andreeva

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – TNT has renewed the medical drama “Hawthorne” for a second season.

The cable network has ordered 10 additional episodes of the freshman show, which stars and is executive-produced by Jada Pinkett Smith. Emmy winner John Masius (“St. Elsewhere”) created the series.

For its first season, “Hawthorne,” which anchors TNT’s Tuesday original programing block at 9 p.m., is averaging 3.8 million viewers.

The second season is slated to air in 2010.

“Hawthorne” co-stars Michael Vartan, Suleka Mathew, David Julian Hirsh, Christina Moore and Hannah Hodson.

I was happy to read about this. The show got started somewhat slow for me but it’s gotten better. The first season ends next week. So I’m looking forward to season two next year.

Jada Pinkett Smith’s new role

Jada Pinkett Smith stars in the upcoming TNT series Hawthorne.

I blogged about this early last month. But before she accepted the role she talked to her husband actor Will Smith and their children about the tv show. Accepting the role meant that Will would become Mr. Mom which I’m sure the kids are enjoying.

Will Smith takes on ‘extra’ duties to support wife’s new TV show

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) — Before Jada Pinkett Smith took the role of producer and star of TNT’s “HawthoRNe,” she made sure her family was fine with her being away from her mother and wife duties during filming.

Pinkett Smith plays a single mom and a hospital’s chief nurse on the medical show, which debuts Tuesday night on cable’s TNT Network, which is owned by the parent company of CNN.

“I sat down with kids and my husband and I really asked their permission,” she said. “I said ‘Listen, there was this show I’d love to do and it will be three months that you might not see Mommy a lot.’ And they’re looking at me like ‘Really? What does that mean?'”

It meant that on weekdays Will would get Willow, 8, and Jaden, 11, out of bed each morning, tuck them in at night and take care of them in-between.

“So they get to eat chocolate for breakfast and go to bed whenever they feel like it for those three months while I’m working,” Pinkett Smith said. “So, it works out, and they know that the rest of the year, I’m off.”

While the show is based on a Richmond, Virginia, hospital, it’s produced in a recently closed Inglewood, California, hospital just a few miles from the Smiths’ home.

The article also mentions that Will will be an extra on Hawthorne so if you blink you might miss him. Check out the entire article here.  While you’re reading check out another article about Jada over at the Los Angeles Times titled Jada Pinkett Smith steps out on Hawthorne.  That article mentions that word of mouth about Hawthorne isn’t that great.  Washington Post critic Tom Shales reviewed both Hawthorne and another new show about a nurse, Nurse Jackie on Showtime last Monday.   Shales had rave reviews for Nurse Jackie and he didn’t like Hawthorne.  I’m still gonna watch Hawthorne since I prefer being my own critic.

Hawthorne premieres on TNT Tuesday, June 16 at 9:00pm ET.

Jada Pinkett Smith stars in Hawthorne

I saw a commercial a couple of weeks ago and thought I was seeing things.  I saw that Jada Pinkett Smith will be starring in a new tv series.  I was thinking, a black actress in a leading role on television?  Yes I know it’s the 21st century but have you taken a good look at television lately?  The new tv show is called Hawthorne and you can catch it on TNT.  By the way Jada is also an executive producer for the show.  Go Jada!!

According to the TNT website:

Following in the footsteps of Kyra Sedgwick in The Closer and Holly Hunter in Saving Grace, Jada Pinkett Smith (The Women, The Matrix Trilogy) is the latest actress to bring her talent to TNT’s arsenal of strong, complex female characters. In this character-driven medical drama told from the nurses’ point of view, she stars as Christina Hawthorne, the forceful-yet-caring director of nursing at Richmond Trinity Hospital. When a patient’s care is at risk, she will not hesitate to violate hospital protocol, defend her staff against egotistical doctors or firmly stand up to apathetic administrators who seem to have forgotten a hospital’s true purpose. Recently widowed, she also has to take on her equally important role as a mother to a willful, rebellious teenage daughter. Pinkett Smith heads a diverse cast that includes David Julian Hirsh (Lovebites), Michael Vartan (Alias), Christina Moore (90210) and Suleka Mathew (Men in Trees). She also serves as executive producer, along with Emmy®-winning creator John Masius (St. Elsewhere, Providence, Dead Like Me) and Jamie Tarses (My Boys).

‘All the pieces fit’ for Pinkett Smith and ‘HawthoRNe

By Gary Strauss
USA TODAY

Jada Pinkett Smith is a film star, heavy metal rocker and mom. So why return to series TV for the first time since the early 1990s in TNT’s HawthoRNe (premieres June 16, 9 ET/PT)?

“I needed a lab where I could learn about story structure, it was a role I hadn’t had an opportunity to play, and it was a three-month shoot. All the pieces fit,” says Pinkett Smith, whose Christina Hawthorne is a hospital nursing director.

“Most medical dramas focus on doctors; this is about nurses,” she says. “There’s also comic relief, but it’s quirky.”

Pinkett Smith said she was drawn to the series by producer Jamie Tarses and creator John Masius, who wrote for St. Elsewhere.

St. Elsewhere was a very good show.  I’m looking forward to watching Hawthorne which premieres on June 16.
