Viola Davis and Taraji P. Henson featured in The Hollywood Reporter

The Hollywood Reporter has a roundtable interview with actresses Viola Davis and Taraji P. Henson along with fellow Emmy contenders Jessica Lange, Lizzy Caplan, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Ruth Wilson.

The actresses are asked about race, sexism, aging in Hollywood, nudity and typecasting.

“So, do you have any whiskey for us?” asked (a mostly joking) Jessica Lange when she sat down to talk shop with five of her peers on a Saturday afternoon this spring. Turns out neither Lange, 66 (American Horror Story: Freak Show), nor her fellow actresses Lizzy Caplan, 32 (Masters of Sex); Viola Davis, 49 (How to Get Away With Murder); Ruth Wilson, 33 (The Affair); Taraji P. Henson, 44 (Empire); and Maggie Gyllenhaal, 37 (The Honorable Woman), needed any loosening up. In a candid conversation that further blurred the lines between “film” and “TV” acting — Lange is a two-time Oscar winner; Davis, Gyllenhaal and Henson all have landed on the Academy’s nomination roster — Emmy’s drama actress contenders freely revealed how they’ve talked themselves out of quitting the business, why nudity never gets easier, the A-list filmmakers on their wish list (hello, Quentin!) and how TV may never be the same after Empire’s Cookie Lyon: “She’s bigger than life. You will love her or hate her.”

Check out the entire interview and the videos at The Hollywood Reporter. SundanceTv will carry The Roundtables starting in August 2015.

Congrats to Taraji P. Henson

Congrats to Taraji P. Henson.  Last night she won the Critics Choice Best Actress in a Drama Award.  Taraji stars as Cookie Lyons in the hit tv show Empire.  Taraji became the first African American actress to win the award in that category.  Next up is the Emmy Awards.  It would be nice to see Taraji win an Emmy Award. No African American actress has ever won the Emmy Awards Best Actress in a Drama category.

Winners at the 2015 Critics’ Choice TV Awards included ‘The Americans,’ ‘Silicon Valley,’ and actress Taraji P. Henson, who won the Best Actress in a Drama prize. Henson is the first black actress to do so and a black actress has still not yet won the equivalent prize at the Emmy Awards.

Taraji P. Henson of “Empire” became the first African-American actress to win the Best Actress in a Drama Series award. The Critics’ Choice TV Awards have been held since 2011, and the previous winners are Claire
Danes, Julianna Margulies, and Tatiana Maslany, who has won the award twice.

I give the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences the side eye. Sometimes actors and actresses starring in new shows have a difficult time getting nominated for Emmy Awards which this group is responsible for. They have a tendency to nominate the same folks every year. I would love to see Taraji, Viola and Kerry nominated. And it would be a tossup between Taraji and Viola.  I’m partial to Taraji cause she’s from the DMV.

Taraji has come a long way from starring in Baby Boy in 2001 to Hustle and Flow in 2005 and now the hit tv series Empire.  I remember watching her in the Lifetime tv series The Division years ago.  You go Taraji!!!
