In Bleu Magazine Jussie talks about his success thanks to Empire:

“It’s been a lesson in patience and hard work. I never had a plan B. I know how to do other things. I always held down a job. I always made sure, as a Black man, that I was responsible for mine,” says Smollett about his journey to Hollywood. “That was always something super important to me and was something instilled in me by my mother–to be a hard working man, a hard working human being.” How did he keep his faith and focus in Hollywood, which is notorious for breaking people’s dreams, passions and spirit? “In those moments it’s so hard to continue in your stride when you feel like no one is listening. That is the test. How much do you really want it and how long are you going to stay at it until you get it. Just have faith and pray about it–and work hard,” Jussie reveals. “Don’t just sit and pray and not do anything, because God helps those who help themselves. Don’t just work and not pray. Believe in something – whether it’s the universe, your God or Janet Jackson. Whatever you believe in, believe in it fully and know that it’s going to be all right.”

Kode | Jamal’s story is so heart provoking and inspirational. Its not common to see a gay black male being portrayed. Was it a lot of pressure preparing for the role?

Jussie | Well because the character is based on Lee Daniels, it wasn’t really a pressure, but more of a responsibility to simply tell the truth. That’s something I embrace and love about playing Jamal. He’s such a layered character who is not clear cut black or white, there’s so many shades of grey to who he is, ya know? I love him.

Kode | Were you expecting such a huge response on Empire when first starting?

Jussie | You know as an artist you pray and you work hard, but you can never really be certain that something will resonate with people the way Empire has. Some of the best projects made are only seen by those who make them. But I did know that it would be critically acclaimed because of the incredible cast, and obviously because of Lee Daniels and Danny Strong. But what it’s becoming is mind blowing!

Kode | Give us a day in the life of Jussie before the Empire fame?

Jussie | Life was kind of the indie version of what it is now. I was actually recording my album in a home studio off of Fairfax with my producer David, while hustling and working a bunch of different jobs so I could pay my bills, to continue doing what I knew I wanted to do.

Kode | Do you have any solo music coming out soon or are you just focused on acting at this current moment?

Jussie | I’m always focused on my music because it’s such a huge piece of my heart, right now my focus is on creating the music for Empire Season 2, but once I get a little down time I will focus more on my personal project.

Kode | What’s next for season 2? Hopefully more celebrity appearances right?

Jussie | Definitely more celebrity appearances, but not in the way that you would necessarily think. It’s really clever the way the stories are all being worked in. There’s also going to be some dope moments of true, raw new talent that’s going to blow your mind.

Kode | What’s something you can’t live without?

Jussie | Love.

Kode | How would you describe your personal style?

Jussie | Carey Grant had sex with Basquiat and had a baby named me.

Since #Kode6 is our #WetHot issue, we thought we would ask you something steamy, Boxers or Briefs?

Jussie | Boxer Briefs, normally briefs with a suit. Never boxers, I can’t stand boxers, go to stay lifted.

Jussie Smollett and Otis The Forehead Pimple Recording Taraji P. Henson

Jussie Smollett posted this video of his Empire co-star Taraji P. Henson getting some shuteye. By the way he named his pimple Otis. Otis has been hanging around since the BET Awards 🙂

Jussie Smollett helps build an ‘Empire’

LOS ANGELES | Growing up in a show-biz family, Jussie Smollett wasn’t sure entertaining was his life’s work.

“At 12, I said, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore,’” he recalls now, 20 years later. “And my mom said, ‘Cool’ and never pushed me into it. Her thing was, whatever you decide to do, you have to do it fully. There’s no backtracking.”

At 23, Smollett says, he stepped back in, realizing he was either going to be an entertainer or president of the United States “and since I’m not old enough to do that, this is it.”

“This,” though, is pretty big, considering he’s one of the stars of “Empire,” the ratings-grabbing drama on Fox. Cast as one of the sons of a music mogul, Smollett gets a chance to sing, dance and act in the series. His character, Jamal, is considered the most likely for superstardom, particularly since he’s managed by his mother (played by Taraji P. Henson). “What Michael Jackson was for the transformation of pop music, that’s where Jamal is going,” Smollett says. “He’s going to be bigger than life.”

Henson’s Cookie is the ultimate stage mom – the bulldozing, “won’t take no” force who doesn’t give up.

In real life, Smollett says, his own mother, Janet, was hardly as headstrong. “My mom was more supportive. She always wanted this to be a fun thing. It was never something to make money.”

Still, he adds, “she was a combination of Cookie Lyon and Maria Von Trapp.”

With his five siblings, Smollett starred in “On Our Own,” an ABC sitcom about seven brothers and sisters being raised by their eldest brother. The series lasted one season, launching several of the Smolletts’ careers. Jurnee, for example, went on to acclaimed roles in films like “Eve’s Bayou” and “The Great Debaters.” She was a regular, as well, in “Friday Night Lights,” “The Defenders” and “Parenthood.” Jake was in the cast of “The Middleman.”

Jussie, though, has also had a singing career, releasing an EP in 2012 and scoring hits from the “Empire” soundtrack.

Sensing that music was going to be a big part of the show, “Empire” producers hired some of the biggest names in the business to cut singles for Smollett and others.

“Four weeks prior (to starting with the show), I was recording my little indie album in a home studio off of Fairfax,” Smollett says. “Four weeks later, big daddy got me up in the studio with Yazz.”
