Apparently there are problems on the set of daytime drama The Young & The Restless. While most of the problems stem from pay disputes, the latest stems from an upcoming storyline. According to TB Television, actor Chris Engen who plays Adam Wilson, aka Victor Newman, Jr., has allegedly left the show due to a same-sex storyline.
Another Young and the Restless star has walked off the set but this time it’s not about money. Chris Engen (Adam Wilson) has allegedly left the show in protest over an upcoming same-sex storyline. After joining the cast of Y&R last year, the role of Adam has become much darker and, in some fans’ opinion, more interesting. The same-sex storyline may have been the last straw for Engen who has reportedly been frustrated with the direction of his character and his lack of screentime.
But there may be something else at play here. Soapcental.com is reporting that Engen may have had personal issues with the storyline. Engen is a graduate of Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, California and is still active with the Catholic school.
The storyline would have had Rafe and Adam becoming intimate and exploring their feelings for each other. It’s been long-rumoured that CBS executives have wanted Y&R to pen a same-sex storyline, similar to Luke and Noah’s on As The World Turns.
But the real question is, what will Y&R do for the time being? Engen is still under contract and the show is considering taking legal action. For now, though, Michael Muhney will be taking over the role starting Thursday, June 25.
And check this out from Soapcentral:
Engen is said to have picked up the latest show script and learned through reviewing his lines that his character was going to be getting intimate with attorney Rafe Torres (Yani Gellman). Months of frustration over the direction of his storyline and lack of airtime exploded in a confrontation between Engen and the show’s production team. According to sources, Engen has long felt that the writing for Adam was going in the wrong direction.
Setside sources told TVGuide Canada, “Chris hasn’t been happy for a while. He doesn’t like the dark direction his character is taking. He’s called in sick a lot recently and has been taking a slew of meetings with Y&R’s [executives] to discuss his future on the show.”
Although Engen is well-known for keeping his personal life separate from his career, some are wondering if his personal beliefs may conflict with his character’s storyline.
I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand Chris is an actor who signed a contract which is a legal document. He’s also an actor on a daytime drama and you don’t know what kind of storyline you’ll be dealing with after being on a show for a certain period of time. But on the other hand since this young man did attend a Catholic school, I’m assuming that he has issues with a same-sex storyline and with the gay lifestyle. The TPTB obviously didn’t discuss this upcoming storyline with Chris to get some input on how he felt about it.
The outcome of this situation should be interesting. And I’m gonna have to get use to a new actor playing Adam.
