Montgomery County police said yesterday that an armed assailant killed his former girlfriend and was fatally shot by police at her home outside Gaithersburg, the first account of what happened in the shooting Saturday night.

The woman, Catherine Brown, was being held in her garage against her will, police said. The former boyfriend, Michael K. Wilson of Hagerstown, was shot “multiple times by police,” police spokeswoman Lucille Baur said.

Citing the ongoing investigation, Baur declined to say who shot first and whether one or more responding officers fired rounds.

Brown was a cousin of Maryland Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown’s. The lieutenant governor said in a statement yesterday that he learned of his cousin’s death Sunday, shortly after he arrived in Denver for the Democratic National Convention. Brown said he was returning to Maryland “with a heavy heart” to be with his family.

“I ask that everyone keep my family in their prayers,” he said in a statement.

Brown, 40, taught first grade at the Beauvoir School on the grounds of Washington National Cathedral in the District. Co-workers described her as a warm, caring person and a vital member of the school community.

Wilson, 44, worked on the grounds of the cathedral as a private security guard, and he was described as a “highly regarded” employee.

But I knew he was bad news and I supposed I could not have changed the outcome. Please don’t remove this piece. 3. Cathy's Handsome Wedding Date

Cathy was a beautiful and intelligent classy lady, it still breaks my heart to think about how her life ended. If you knew her smile and laugh and her eyes looking at you you’d miss her too. Her end is not the thing to commit to your memory but rather how she lived
and her radiant smile and laugh could make you feel.

  4. Cathy I still miss you!

  5. I was Cathy’s friend. We were as close as sisters, and I miss her every day. She didn’t deserve this…that moron was never fit to shine her shoes, and she quickly realized what all of her friends knew. He was a nothing and a nobody. Cathy is with the Angels. He, on the other hand, is burning in hell.

  6. My daughter Seymone and I will miss Ms. Brown. Ms. Brown was Seymone’s teacher for 1st Grade at Beauvoir. She was a wonderful, loving teacher.
