Well it’s day four of the 2008 Summer Olympics. I’m enjoying it so far. I’ve been checking out everything they have to offer on NBC, MSNBC, USA and Oxygen (they showed the equestrian competition). The remote has been my best friend for the past few days. I’ve been watching swimming, volleyball, diving, beach volleyball, rowing, water polo, gymnastics, cycling and even a little bit of handball. I missed the mens basketball game yesterday. I was asleep.
I was psyched over the 4×100 men’s relay last night. Team USA won the gold medal by defeating the trash talking team from France. Michael Phelps, Garrett Weber-Gale, Cullen Jones and Jason Lezak won the gold medal for the United States. That was an amazing race.
There’s been a bit of rumbling over the Chinese womens gymnastics team. Legendary gymnastics coach Bela Karolyi has been doing alot of complaining about the Chinese girls. Some of the girls look very young. The youngest age accepted for participation is 16 years old. But after watching the competition yesterday I find it hard to believe that one of the Chinese gymnasts is 16 years old.
The young lady on the far left is 4’5 and weighs 68 pounds. She looks like an eleven year old, not sixteen. I couldn’t believe how tiny and young looking she was when I saw her on television. All the Chinese girls are terrific gymnasts but the age thing baffles me. I’ve seen some young looking American gymnasts in all the years I’ve been watching Olympic gymnastics but I don’t remember any looking like an eleven year old.
Anyway I have two more weeks of Summer Olympic enjoyment. You only get this every four years.
