Goodbye Newsweek Magazine

September 27, 2010 Leave a comment

My subscription to Newsweek Magazine expires next month. I’ve been receiving renewal notices but I threw them in the trash. I decided not to renew my subscription to Newsweek.

I’ve been an avid reader of Newsweek since high school and I’ve been a subscriber since the 1980′s. Use to be a really nice magazine. But something happened last year. They reinvented themselves. The magazine got smaller and instead of news articles there’s mostly opinion pieces in the magazine. Talk about boring.  Even the website has changed and not for the better.

It was announced last month that the Washington Post sold Newsweek to businessman Sidney Harman, who made his fortune in audio equipment.  He bought the magazine for $1.00. Yeah, that’s right $1.00.

The Washington Post Company Agrees to Sell NEWSWEEK to Sidney Harman

As part of the ownership transition, editor Jon Meacham will step down.

The Washington Post Company announced today that it has signed a contract to sell NEWSWEEK to Sidney Harman, a successful businessman who made his fortune in audio equipment and is a well-known philanthropist.

Harman, 91, the founder and chairman emeritus of Harman International, was one of several bidders for the magazine, according to sources familiar with the process, and the deal was not concluded until today, even as some of the interested parties upped their bids this morning.

It will be interesting to see what changes Mr. Harman makes. But those changes won’t be coming to my mailbox anymore. I might check out Newsweek at the newstand just to see what’s going on. But I wonder if the print edition of Newsweek will even exist a few years from now.

Washington Redskins lose to the St. Louis Rams

Yes, the Washington Redskins lost their second game in a row. This time to the lowly St. Louis Rams 30-16.

Washington Redskins lose to St. Louis Rams despite injury to Steven Jackson

ST. LOUIS – After making many poor decisions in his first 11 seasons as owner, Daniel Snyder hired a proven winner in Coach Mike Shanahan, provided support for the new head of the Redskins’ football operation and moved into the background to let Shanahan work alone out front.

And it appears Snyder must do one more thing for Shanahan: Be patient.

The rebuilding process could take a while, which was evident again Sunday as the struggling St. Louis Rams raced to an early lead and pulled away late during a 30-16 victory over the Redskins at the Edward Jones Dome.

Although the Rams have only two victories in their last 29 games and seven in their past 51, they were 14 points better than the Redskins, who endured a similarly frustrating experience last season in Week 3. That was when the hapless Lions stunned the Redskins in Detroit. It was the Rams in the third week this time.

Players did not envision losing to either team – but lose they definitely did.

The Redskins have a tendency of losing to teams with losing records. And the streak continues.

I don’t know how long I can continue to support this team. I’ve been a long time fan since the 70′s. I’ve stood by the Redskins through the good years and the bad years. But the bad years are lasting too damn long thanks to Dan Snyder. Even my mom is saying that she’s getting tired of watching the Redskins and their losing ways.

I know we have a new coach and new quarterback. But where is the defense? Looks like any team can throw against the Redskins defense.

Next week the Redskins meet the Philadelphia Eagles in Philadelphia. The so called city of brotherly love.  I don’t think the Redskins and especially Donovan McNabb will receive any sort of brotherly love from Eagles fans.

After an opening victory over the Dallas Cowboys, Washington (1-2) has dropped two in a row and next faces the NFC East-division leading Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. It will be their first contest against Philadelphia since McNabb was traded from that team last spring.

Rainy days & Mondays

September 27, 2010 Leave a comment

Today was one of those rainy Mondays around here. Monday is not my favorite day of the week and adding rain to it doesn’t help one bit.

But thankfully I worked from home today. I’m so glad I didn’t have to go out in that rainy weather. Folks around here don’t know how to drive when it’s raining. Some seem to lose their minds. And let’s not talk about tailgaters. When it comes to folks driving behind me, if I can’t see your headlights then you are too damn close. This goes for nice sunny days as well.

So glad it’s Friday. It was a long week and that damn 90 degree weather came back yesterday.  I thought we were through with that.

Anyway check out Tom Browne’s 1980 smash hit Funkin’ For Jamaica. It’s from his cd Love Approach. I haven’t heard Funkin’ For Jamaica in a long time.

And check out Thighs High (Grip Your Hips & Move) from his cd Magic.

Undercovers premieres tomorrow night

September 21, 2010 Leave a comment

NBC’s new series Undercovers premieres tomorrow night at 8:00pm ET. The show stars former Soul Food alum Boris Kodjoe and British actress Gugu Mbatha-RawUndercovers also stars former Simon & Simon star Gerald McRaney and Mekia Cox who was a dancer in the Michael Jackson documentary concert film This Is It.

I’ve been looking forward to watching this show since they announced that Boris and Gugu would be the leading stars. Talk about a miracle on network television. And it shouldn’t be a miracle in the 21st century.  I blogged about this miracle back in February.

Anyway MSNBC has an article about the show and interviews the two actors.

‘Undercovers’ puts minority leads in the TV spotlight

New series from ‘Lost’ creator features two main characters who happen to be black

Voters may have overwhelmingly elected a black man as president in 2008, but broadcast TV decision makers still don’t fully believe mainstream audiences will embrace a drama series with a black lead unless coupled with a white actor or as part of a large, multiracial ensemble cast. And don’t even consider two black leads carrying a drama series on a major network.

“Lost” creator J.J. Abrams may change that perception with his anticipated new show on NBC, “Undercovers,” which debuts Sept. 23. (TODAYshow.com is a part of msnbc.com, which is a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

The drama stars Boris Kodjoe and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Steven and Samantha Bloom, a married couple who were once spies and are now getting back into the business. At the core, the show is a brightly written romantic adventure with two strong leading characters who happen to be black.

Boris made an interesting yet very true comment about how things go in liberal Hollywood.

“I just decided I wasn’t going to be the affirmative action guy,” Kodjoe said of the practice of auditioning minorities for roles. “Everybody says you did a great job. Then you get the call they ‘went another way,’ which means they went with a white actor. (The color of your skin) is something you have no control over. After a while, it wears you out.”

But Undercovers creator J.J. Abrams and producer Josh Reims were definitely looking for a different type of cast from what you’re normally seeing on network television.

He was finally persuaded that Reims and Abrams were serious about casting non-white actors in the roles if they could find the right actors. The veteran producers knew exactly what they didn’t want to see in their two prospective leads: the same homogenous actors playing in every other series on the air.

“We wanted (our series) to look different,” said Reims, who previously worked with Abrams on “Felicity.” “We didn’t go out of our way to say we are hiring two black people to be the leads of the show. But we (knew) it would be great if we could do that.”

Washington Redskins blow a 17 point lead

September 20, 2010 Leave a comment

Can you believe that mess? I was enjoying this game and then what happened?  The Redskins defense collapsed.  The headline on the front page of today’s Washington Post sports section says it all.

The Redskins blew a 17 point lead and lost to the Houston Texas in overtime 30-27.  I was pissed after watching this game.  Despite Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb having a great day throwing over 400 yards, the Redskins defense let the Houston Texans quarterback enjoy a 400 yards plus game as well. :-( :-( :-(

Washington Redskins’ effort in overtime goes to waste as Houston Texans roar back for 30-27 victory

Immediately after Houston Texans place kicker Neil Rackers made a game-winning 35-yard field goal, many Redskins players struggled to accept the disappointing developments for them in a 30-27 overtime loss Sunday at FedEx Field.

So much had gone well for Washington throughout most of a game in which they collapsed late.

“Just to be at home, and having the crowd behind you and getting up like we did, you just didn’t expect this,” tight end Fred Davis said. “You feel like you got the win sealed, so it was exhausting. Just emotionally exhausting.”

Having squandered an opportunity to begin Coach Mike Shanahan’s time with the team 2-0 was the cruelest blow. “It hurts,” outside linebacker Brian Orakpo said. “It stings, man. We let this one go. We blew it. Could have easily been sitting here 2-0, very happy, regardless of what the score is. But right now, it hurts. We’re 1-1.”

Washington squandered a 17-point, third-quarter lead in losing to Houston (2-0), wasting a 426-yard passing performance from quarterback Donovan McNabb, who carried things offensively, with the team rushing for only 18 yards.

Houston Coach Gary Kubiak leaned on quarterback Matt Schaub (497 yards passing, three touchdowns) and wide receiver Andre Johnson (12 receptions, 158 yards, one touchdown) to beat Shanahan, his longtime friend, former coach, employer and mentor.

Countdown to the Wegmans grand opening

September 19, 2010 3 comments

While reading my Sunday paper (yes I still read the print edition) I noticed on the back page of the Arts & Style section that the new Wegmans has a huge full page advertisement.

The advertisement mentions that there are five more weeks until the grand opening on October 24. There’s also a link to a page about the grand opening containing several videos including a welcome to Wegmans video from the Wegmans Woodmore manager Ayana Douglas and a contest you can enter to win a $25 gift card. You can also sign up to receive the free shoppers card.

Seeing the address had me wondering? Since when did that area off Route 202 become Lanham ;-)

Vincent Gray defeats Adrian Fenty in D.C. primary

September 15, 2010 Leave a comment

D.C. Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray defeated current Washington, D.C. mayor Adrian Fenty in the Democratic primary mayoral race yesterday.

With no one in the Republican Party to oppose him in the general election in November, Vincent Gray will become the next mayor of Washington, D.C.  He will also become the oldest mayor elected in D.C.

Gray decisively defeats Fenty in race for D.C. mayor

D.C. Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray won the Democratic nomination for mayor early Wednesday. With nearly all returns counted, voters rejected incumbent Adrian M. Fenty’s hard-charging style in favor of promises of a new, conciliatory approach to governing a fast-changing city.

Gray won with 59,285 votes to Fenty’s 50,850. A few precincts’ results had not been counted at 1:40 a.m., but elections officials said they could not change the outcome.

“We know that we will be celebrating a very big victory very soon,” Jonice Gray Tucker, Gray’s daughter, told the crowd at her father’s party shortly before midnight.

Fenty, the youngest mayor in the four decades of home rule, drew national accolades for his efforts to reform schools; oversaw a dramatic decline in the homicide rate; and led a successful drive to build neighborhood amenities such as recreational centers, dog parks and athletic fields.

Fenty appeared before supporters at 1:18 a.m., refusing to concede and rallying his troops with a battle cry of “On to victory.”

Gray, 67, who spent most of his career leading local nonprofit organizations, has soared swiftly through the ranks of the city’s political establishment. A former executive director of the Association of Retarded Citizens and Covenant House Washington, he was elected to the council by Ward 7 voters in 2004. After only two years in that job, he waged a successful campaign for chairman. Although he was expected to cruise to easy reelection this year, Gray decided in late March to enter the mayor’s race, even though he faced an uphill fight against a well-funded, telegenic mayor who boasted of a long list of achievements.

I read about Mayor Fenty’s arrogance.  But seeing is believing:

While Gray mulled over his future, Fenty continued to be dogged by bad publicity. After a record-breaking snowstorm over the first weekend in February, Fenty initially pushed to open schools and city government on Monday morning, enraging some parents and city employees.

A few days later, when WRC-TV anchor Eun Yang asked Fenty when the snow would finally be cleared from city streets, the mayor snapped that the question “doesn’t make any sense.” The snow would be gone, he said, when “the temperature gets warm enough that it can melt.”

When the temperature gets warm enough that it can melt? WTF kind of response is that?  I wonder if Eun Yang gave him the side eye ;-)

According to TBD, Mayor Fenty conceded to Vincent Gray this morning.

The telephonic stalemate had legs, too. Last night, even after most news organizations had called the race for Gray, the mayor apparently couldn’t bring himself to dial Gray’s number.

The two finally connected this morning, with Fenty doing the dialing. Both pledged to continue that connection and work toward a smooth transition in D.C.’s executive branch. Gray even suggested the mayor might be prepared for their first sit-down, face-to-face meeting in months.

Check out the article and the Vincent Gray press conference at TBD.com.

TNT renews Hawthorne

Good news!!! TNT has renewed the series Hawthorne which stars Jada Pinkett Smith and Michael Vartan.

TNT’s ‘Hawthorne’ prescribed a third season

By Rodney Ho

TNT’s “Hawthorne” is getting another lease on life. The Atlanta-based network has ordered a third ten-episode run for this Jada Pinkett Smith-led nurse drama. It’s set to be back in 2011.

The first season in 2009 averaged 3.4 million viewers. This past season, which concluded last last month, drew an average of 3.1 million viewers, though it increases to 3.7 million when you count DVR viewing the rest of the week.

It stars Pinkett-Smith as a tough yet caring nurse. Her hospital shut down season one and she adjusts to life at another problematic hospital season two. She also grapples with a relationship with a doctor who had treated her late husband.

Though critical reception has been tepid compared to that of shows such as “The Closer,” TNT said “Hawthorne” has resonated with women 25 to 54, where it ranked No. 1 among cable ad-supported shows on Tuesday nights. Its ratings are comparable to that of “Leverage” and “Memphis Blue” and better than “Dark Blue.”

After the season finale I was wondering if TNT was gonna renew Hawthorne.  The down side to this is that there are only 10 episodes which means that the series goes by so fast.  Anyway I’m happy for Jada, Michael and the rest of the cast and I’m looking forward to season 3 next summer.
