Mellody Hobson and George Lucas

Mellody Hobson and George Lucas attended the Academy Awards together. Mellody is the President of Ariel Capital Management and she’s also the financial contributer to ABC’s Good Morning America. George Lucas is the director and producer of the Star Wars films. Anyway they attended the Oscars and a pre Oscar party together and this had some tongues wagging. Huh, in 2007?

AT the Oscar “Night Before” party at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Saturday, “Star Wars” creator George Lucas had guests wide-eyed when he showed up with “Good Morning America” financial correspondent Mellody Hobson. “They were definitely together – it was the oddest thing,” said our source. The two have been seen in public together before, but it is not known if they’re dating.

I’m trying to figure out why the guests were wide-eyed. Are these same folks wide-eyed when they see Seal and his wife Heidi Klum together? What about Sidney Poitier and his wife Joanna Shimkus? And the oddest thing? What’s so odd about Mellody and George being together? It’s 2007, not 1907. Interracial dating ain’t nothing new. Or does the thought of someone like George Lucas dating a black woman make some folks nervous? Oh, I forgot. In our society black women are at the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to desirablity. I guess to some folks why couldn’t George find a white, asian or latina woman to date?

And don’t get me started on the hate mongers at Black Voices. I lurk there once in a while and I saw a thread about George and Mellody. The usual suspects were out in full force showing their displeasure and hate at Mellody having the nerve to date a white man with her sellout self, lol. Apparently a black woman living her own life and dating whom she pleases makes some black folks uncomfortable. Female as well as male. Don’t know why black women especially are disturbed by this? Why are black women up in arms when other black women date interracially?

I can give you one reason why… You have this successful BILLIONARE with a BLACK woman and not a white woman who seems to much more successful in getting a rich man.

Can anybody else think of another reason?

    …another reason? Sure.

He dated Barbra Streisand and Linda Ronstadt for a while, too, before they figured out they didn’t want him. Before Mellody there was Aleja. He has even been fishing at the Playboy Mansion.

Astrologers do not see this current pairing lasting either. She might be better off with the HBO CEO. Remember, the rich only have more money; they are not better than anyone else.

I was surprized because I didn’t know they were dating. Maybe thats why everyone was wide-eyed…

You know why I think it is? I think it is more due to the fact that she seems so cool, and GL seems so, well, nerdy. I mean god bless the whole Star Wars gig and everything… I know friends who know him, and he is supposed to be super nice, and has been alone for a long time raising his children, so I say, good for him.

I also think that perhaps some women are jealous bec she is younger, prettier, more successful and (still) cooler than they are…

Is there also a big age difference between the two? I think race has something to do with it but also their backgrounds just don’t seem to come across as their circles meeting.

I just read in Today’s Chicago Woman they were dating. My first thought was, “George Lucas? Isn’t he like 60?”. That’s the only odd thing I find, as a white woman. She is obviously quite articulate, etc, etc, etc. and has made much more a success of her own life than most other women. I just hope since she must have high standards and is intimidating to many men, that she doesn’t settle unless he’s truly what she wants. After all, like other single women, she hasn’t been unmarried this long to settle for less than what she deserves. But sure, it would be fun to date George Lucas if given the chance…as long as he treats you well, which he probably does. When two good, successful people meet each other it’s often refreshing to them.

    “…the oddest thing..”

hi Classic Rose the oddest thing I can see is that the picture of them together was published at all. In mainstream news. This version of interracial dating is often the least celebrated or publicised. It sends out a message it’s not kinda okay (read = normal) for a white man to seriously date like a black woman. If it was a lurid or sexual only then it will make the news but dating and marriage? Big silence speaks volumes. I was glad to see this picture especially as she herself is well-heeled.

There are blogs supporting black women (BW) and interracial relationships (IRR) i.e. dating/marriage, you’ll often find loads of pictures showing white men (WM) with BW. You’ll recognise many of the faces and I reckon you’d be surprised that MOST of these pictures were ‘missed out’ from the mainstream, simply tucked away on online archive – not featured in the news, in sound bites or small articles – especially if the white man is really successful. Like GL.

    FYI: take a look at
    http://bfinterracialmarriage.blogspot.com/
Scroll down the sidebar on the right and see whether or not you even KNEW that these celeb couples exist(ed). The blog also pics of non-celeb everyday couples too.
Those pictures should have anyone wide-eyed ha ha

I think it is an odd pairing. Not because of race, but because…well…uh…I think she can do better.

Yes, he is rich and successful. But he’s old and flabby. He’s had a couple of bitter break-ups. And always comes off as square.

Where as Melody is HOT. And smart. And way cooler than him.

But maybe he’s a bobcat in the sack.

He’s dating this Hobson woman? How so? He was with someone else recently at the opening of Carrie Fisher’s one-woman show, “Wishful Drinking” at a theater in Berkeley.

I was surprised at the age difference, not the race.

Hope you caught the fact that he was again with Ms. Hobson at the premier. I think it smells like a duck, looks like a duck and acts like a duck. Move on. He wants this lady, as uncomfortable as that may seem to some.

I just noticed today on a clip from GMA. So I’m behind the curve on this one.
My opinion, so what? If they make each other happy who should care. George has good taste.

I was surprised to learn that Lucas is 64 and Hobson is 39. I am about the same age as Hobson and single and am just getting comfortable with dating any man older than his late 40′s. That said, I have noticed some of the posts have mentioned Lucas’ money. Mellody is extremely successful and well of financially herself. Not at the billionaire strata such as Lucas but President and Chairman of the Board of Ariel Capital Investments. So what is more odd to me is the age difference in combination with race. Not just race.

what is the issue here? i, for one, am glad that black women are seen as desirable and as beautiful as the next woman. so what about the age difference, financial difference and most definitely the color difference? who cares? they look happy, and are probably way happier than a lot of same race couples. all you nay-sayers need to get the hell over yourselves.

the truth in love :The truth is that you do not see rich white men with black women, but you always see rich black men with trashy white women, look at Tiger Woods. Another Kendra Williams, a former playboy model. What is it with Black men and these women. There are only two more famous white men with black women, Robert Deniro and the film critic and he’s sick and need someone to take care of him. And these women are only their 2nd wives. Once you go black you won’t go back is only because, no decent white man will marry a white women with all of those mixed kids.

Mellody is successful herself but I will sadly say that he won’t marry her. Most White American men have not found the comfort to keep a black woman for the long haul(marriage).

Sometimes I worry about my race. Why are we so adamant about who dates who. I have been with African-American men all my adult life, I too am African-American, my children are successful and professional but they too married African-Americans. My grandchildren have crossed the barriers and are with Caucasian men, am I angry NO. Why am I not angry, because my materal grandmother’s mother was French-white, my paternal grandmother was Chawtaw Indian but I still am African American and proud of it. I’m from L.A. but migrated to Oregon with the rest of my family and most of my sisters children are with European Americans I love them all so what’s the problem. I’ll tell you racism is still rampant in America. The color of your skin is still a problem. Jelousy from European American women is rampant, in truth they hate that a European American male would cross over and be with a “Black Women”. I could go on and on, truly I could write a book.

Mellody is beautiful and very successful. She doesn’t need George Lucas’ money. She knows how to manage hers and his. He is NOT attractive and he is 25 years older than her! That’s what’s so shocking about the pairing! SHE could do better. He has the “catch” in this relationship.

  21. January 24, 2012 at 11:12 PM | #21

    Chichi,

That is not true Robert DeNiro is married and the Movie critic is married, so that is not a true statment.

GL is nerdy, a writer said above: Honey, nerdy is passionate and deep in the intimacy dept; (and none of us can doubt GL’s creativity); Age is sweet, & great in those quiet evenings, on his lap, in front of the fire place, learning & sharing experiences; wealth & influence is great also, cause as one writer mentioned above, having a gentleman with power, and ‘not’ intimidated by a successful sista, is quite relaxing, and makes for a fresh, open, & fun time…none of that hater, ‘bringing you down’, “how can I compete with, instead of love” crap, that goes on with men, and…all races do it. I just turned a young, fine 60 this Nov 4th, and I’ve love a man, Italian, & 35 yrs my senior. He’s deceased now, but lived to be 91. I must say, his was the greatest, richest love I’ve ever had from a man. He wasn’t wealthy but he was ‘always’ there for me. His love for me was passionate, tender, and genuine. He got excited when someone mentioned my name, like no man ever did, and “I” was the apple of his trained eye. Luv um 4 me lil’ sista.. u go head…at least someone else can enjoy what love has to offer.. No matter how long u live, u will always feel the luv of an older man, cause they know how 2 luv, & their love is unending!
